Updates and Rambles

I don’t have any real goal for this post so we are just rolling with it today, how exciting right?

Update Number One: I updated my about me pages… nothing major just made it more relevant and changed around a few things.

Update Number Two: I got a twitter for this lovely blog o’ mine!  Follow me and I will promise to blow your mind daily with witty tand insightful thoughts… just kidding… I’m still learning but if you are willing to watch me try I would very much appreciate it and maybe ONE day blow your minds.

Update Number Three: I ran 7 miles over the weekend which was a very exciting accomplishment! I did not post about it because I used my garmin and got all distracted but it happened and this week when I move up in mileage I promise to actually post about it… I mean the Mad Marathon is just over a month away… gotta keep it up!

Update Number Four: I am down 7lbs since I moved home and thanks to my new found motivation (cough* cough* running in to the ex-boyfriend with a new girlfriend cough* cough*) I joined a gym close by work to take part in group exercise classes and use the scary-ass fun weight machines.  Judge me as needed for this girly admission, motivation is motivation however you slice it right?

Update Number Five: I crossed off something SUPER fun on my summer bucket list over the weekend. I practiced for hours and think I have finally got it down to where I have myself convinced I look damn good doing it… if you read the list I think you will be able to tell you what I did but I’m going to make a completely separate post about it this week (maybe even a video… hello youtube fame) so hold on to your hats!

Update Number Six: I have spent the last four days watching the first season of House online.  I have seen House randomly and always loved it and now that I know it ended I want to watch all of the seasons so that is what I am working on.  I love it, I am a big fan of crime shows but the more I watch the less sleep I get.  House gives me that same drama of what is going to happen next except I’m just not thinking I’ll develop lepracy tomorrow… fingers crossed anyway!

Update Number Seven: I am joining the Foodie Penpals army! It is so exciting! Basically I’m going to be sending a food filled care package to a random blogger/reader ($15 max) and another blogger/reader will be sending me one as well.  June 30th is the reveal day of what we got and I am so pumped! I of course will cover more of the details when reveal day comes around but if you are interested definitely click on the link!  I hope the people I send boxes to like maple… gotta represent Vermont;)

Update Number Eight: It is the Burlington Discover Jazz Festival this week! This is such a cool event put on by so many different vendors and local businesses to showcase some AMAZING talent from around the world.  I think I’m going to at least one show four out of the ten days it is put on so that in itself will be a really fun distraction.  I will probably be overposting about it so you have been warned!  You know I love me some people watching and music;)

Alright folks, I think you’ve had enough of my rambles now I am busting out my first “questions” that I see everyone else post on their blogs (genious really) you guys are such trend setters.

Have you done anything or looking forward to anything new and exciting lately?

Is anyone else TERRIFIED of weight machines at the gym?

HMT: Day 24 and INSANITY

I saw a blog recently that had a post about a website called dailymile and decided to see what it was all about last night.  Much to my excitement it seems that I will now have yet another form of social media to post my runs to, it is a funny thing this running community, so supportive!  It makes me so happy every time I can log a work out or show any progress and dailymile seems to be a really fun way to do it.  Definitely add me if you are on it or thinking about joining it!  (greenmountaingal is my username)

Today was a run day but today was also day two of a program I just started called Insanity! which is a p90x type program deisgned to bring you to the brink of death every day for 60 days and then bam you are hot stuff… or so I like to think of it as anyway… It is actually the first and only thing I have ever purchased from an infomercial and I am sad to say it was purchased over 5 months ago… oops!

I’m not gonna lie I looked just as badass as this girl ^ except not…

So a quick recap of that yesterday was basically do these 10 exercises for a few minutes each and see how many you can get, then every few weeks I will redo that work out and see my progress… quite frankly I don’t really care how many more sets I can do I just care that I am able to fit in to the insane amount of summer dresses I have in my closet… but noting my progress is a nice perk in theory.  Today was more of a beat you up with exercises designed for football and basketball players.  I have to say it went fairly well but only time will tell if I am still able to walk most days.

On to the run!

Day: 24

Distance: 3 miles

Time: 37:00/ 12:32min/m

Temperature: 50s and gloomy… some rain towards the end… Dear Weather Gods, get your act together. Thanks!

Injuries: I did the run before Insanity so I felt like a real person.  I didn’t feel much pain anywhere so it was actually a pretty good run.

The run felt like it flew by probably because I was just so excited to track my first run on dailymile… seriously I am like a kid in a candy store with new websites.  If you saw me when I got my pinterest a little over a year ago it was literally all I could do for a month straight.  On another note I found this picture from when I was moving, here is all of the race tshirts I have collected so far, I have been quoted multiple times saying “I only run these things for the free stuff” and I’d say it is still probably half the reason haha. I swear one day I am going to make a quilt with them!

Happy First of the Month! I hope it is a ballin’ one:)

HMT: Day 22 and My First 1/2 Marathon.

Day: 22

Distance: 4 miles

Time: 48:30/12.08 min/mi

Temperature: 40s sunny but insanely windy!

Injuries: I have a splinter… that sounds so pathetic but it hurt so bad.

This run was hard for me I am not going to lie.  The first mile was like oh man how am I going to pull this off, miles two and three were when I got distracted and mile four was like GET ME BACK HOME NOW. I started reminiscing about my first half marathon and the “training” that went in to it, so I thought I would share with you guys.

Spring 2008

Senior year I had started getting into shape during snowboarding season by randomly run/walking this loop around my house, probably not exceeding 2 miles ever.  Over February vacation in Colorado a few of my older sister’s teaching partners were discussing how they had just started training for the Vermont City Marathon.  I boldy made the claim that I would love to run one of those sometime in the future and can honestly say I only half meant it.  Cut to March and I was approached by my sister to see if I wanted to be the second half of a 2-person relay with one of her friends from school.  I agreed to it, thinking I was going to back out because that is what I had always done whenever I agreed to things that took up time (not proud of this, just being honest).  In high school I always wanted to stand out, I know I was thinking… wow people would be really impressed with me if I ran a half marathon (such a stellar reason I know).

I began “training” by running the same 2-3 mile loop around my neighborhood a few times a week, I can’t honestly tell you how many times a week I did this but I imagine it was 4-5 days because I would do it right after school so that I could run by the high school and prove to people that I was actually training (again, I was an attention seeker, I realize how dumb this sounds). Anyway, I remember doing one run for 5 miles and then another one for 7 but those are the only two long runs I did.  I ONLY DID TWO LONG RUNS!  Here is what I do remember, and so very clearly.  In mid-March when I had agreed to do this, I weighed about 155lbs (I’m 5’7″ if you would like to know) and by Memorial day weekend (the weekend of the race) I was down to just under 140.  I never changed my diet or anything, I just ran 4-5 days for about 30 minutes and lost over 15lbs.  Everyone was telling me how great I looked and wondering what I had done to lose the weight.  I felt awesome.

Cut to race morning, I’m nervous, my whole body is in knots, I have no idea where I am running that day I just know where I am supposed to be dropped off and I am TERRIFIED of being late.  I had never done one of these things nor did I know anyone who had.  So I wore sneakers that were a size too big for me, soffe shorts and men’s tank top undershirt that my field hockey team had dyed a few months prior… I wore soffe shorts to run in a marathon.  Runner me now thinks runner me now was ridiculous.  My dad dropped me off near the park where the switch off point was and I noticed all these people running around to warm-up, my exact thought process… what are all these people doing? Warming up? Why in the world would you run before you are about to run 13 miles???

So I waited for my partner to get to the check point, I remember being so nervous that all I could focus on was my fear of getting a sun burn so I lathered myself up til I exhausted the bottle.  According to her training she would be finished her half in just over 2 hours so I patiently waited, and waited, and waited, for what seemed like forever.  Just before 10:30 I saw her and my former field hockey coach running down the bike path.  Angela came into the check point and gave me the ankle monitor, she gave me a hug and said “Good luck, Have fun at Prom!”

Yes ladies and gentlemen, I ran my first half marathon the morning of my senior prom.

An 18 year old girl is never more nervous the morning of her senior prom, except when she has a half marathon to run before it.  My friend made me an awesome half marathon playlist that was kept secret from me til the race day so all along I was running with some fun tunes never expecting what was going to come next (I only skipped a couple). So there I was running and feeling fabulous until mile 7 when after running through a sprinkler in one of the neighborhoods, my iPod fried itself and I was tuneless.  Here are five things I guarantee you will never think to yourself while running in a marathon…

Will the pedicure I just got be ruined when I take these sneakers off?

Will people see my tan lines in my prom dress?

What time is the limo picking us up?

Will I have enough time to get my hair done?

Did my boyfriend get the corsage?

It was hard.  It was the hardest thing I had ever done and I did it.  I crossed the finish line to nobody (my parents thought I would take longer so they were eating lunch haha) and I cried.  I cried because I was tired, because I was sore, and because I was just so damn proud of myself.  When I saw my parents I remember the first thing I said to them was “don’t mind me I am a freaking rock star.”  That is exactly how I felt.  I actually followed through with something and that is a feeling that nobody can ever take from me.  Oh and I looked like a million bucks at prom, dancing into crazy hours of the night with my best friends, one could hardly tell I ran 13.1 miles that morning.  It was one of the most amazing days of my life and I cannot wait to have that feeling again!

This is a fraudulent picture… this is actually from my second half marathon but I felt like it was necessary.  I finished the first half marathon  in 2:42, not bad for only running 7 miles before.

This is my favorite picture from prom.  This is my former boyfriend now one of my dearest friends and ironically we are standing exactly where the finish line for the marathon was.  Weird huh?
