Updates and Rambles

I don’t have any real goal for this post so we are just rolling with it today, how exciting right?

Update Number One: I updated my about me pages… nothing major just made it more relevant and changed around a few things.

Update Number Two: I got a twitter for this lovely blog o’ mine!  Follow me and I will promise to blow your mind daily with witty tand insightful thoughts… just kidding… I’m still learning but if you are willing to watch me try I would very much appreciate it and maybe ONE day blow your minds.

Update Number Three: I ran 7 miles over the weekend which was a very exciting accomplishment! I did not post about it because I used my garmin and got all distracted but it happened and this week when I move up in mileage I promise to actually post about it… I mean the Mad Marathon is just over a month away… gotta keep it up!

Update Number Four: I am down 7lbs since I moved home and thanks to my new found motivation (cough* cough* running in to the ex-boyfriend with a new girlfriend cough* cough*) I joined a gym close by work to take part in group exercise classes and use the scary-ass fun weight machines.  Judge me as needed for this girly admission, motivation is motivation however you slice it right?

Update Number Five: I crossed off something SUPER fun on my summer bucket list over the weekend. I practiced for hours and think I have finally got it down to where I have myself convinced I look damn good doing it… if you read the list I think you will be able to tell you what I did but I’m going to make a completely separate post about it this week (maybe even a video… hello youtube fame) so hold on to your hats!

Update Number Six: I have spent the last four days watching the first season of House online.  I have seen House randomly and always loved it and now that I know it ended I want to watch all of the seasons so that is what I am working on.  I love it, I am a big fan of crime shows but the more I watch the less sleep I get.  House gives me that same drama of what is going to happen next except I’m just not thinking I’ll develop lepracy tomorrow… fingers crossed anyway!

Update Number Seven: I am joining the Foodie Penpals army! It is so exciting! Basically I’m going to be sending a food filled care package to a random blogger/reader ($15 max) and another blogger/reader will be sending me one as well.  June 30th is the reveal day of what we got and I am so pumped! I of course will cover more of the details when reveal day comes around but if you are interested definitely click on the link!  I hope the people I send boxes to like maple… gotta represent Vermont;)

Update Number Eight: It is the Burlington Discover Jazz Festival this week! This is such a cool event put on by so many different vendors and local businesses to showcase some AMAZING talent from around the world.  I think I’m going to at least one show four out of the ten days it is put on so that in itself will be a really fun distraction.  I will probably be overposting about it so you have been warned!  You know I love me some people watching and music;)

Alright folks, I think you’ve had enough of my rambles now I am busting out my first “questions” that I see everyone else post on their blogs (genious really) you guys are such trend setters.

Have you done anything or looking forward to anything new and exciting lately?

Is anyone else TERRIFIED of weight machines at the gym?

Sweet, sweet, summer time!

Oh my goodness, oh my goodness, it is officially summer time!

My friends are home, work is crazy and the weather is beautiful… couldn’t be happier:)

I have a run post for tomorrow AND a post about my summer bucket list but today I’m just quickly writing about the delicious dinner I had with the boy yesterday.

We went to One Federal, a really cute favorite spot of the locals in St. Albans.  A place we normally only go to on Thursdays for “Switchback Thursdays” as Dave’s friends have coined it, but yesterday we actually ate there and I must say it was fantastic.

I mean how cute is this place?

One, I still can’t tell you how much I appreciate the different people in Vermont… quirky, friendly, hippie, eclectic…

I basically think if you know a Vermonter you’re doing well for yourself;)

What makes me say this is that I thought our adorable waitress was awesome, the kind of waitress who checks on you but doesn’t over do it at all, the kind of waitress who rocks auburn hair with huge turquoise earrings, I loved it.

Two, I can’t tell you how much I miss certain parts of the south… the friends, the accents (I still say ya’ll) and of course the Vols…

So I ordered a drink called a “Southern Peach” and it was fabulous… the menu said in small print at the bottom “two drinks per customer” and I completely understand why… I felt it walking away from the table and I like to think I hold my liquor well.

Three, I still have extreme vegetarian tendencies… though I now eat meat I still feel weird sometimes and cooking it is virtually out of the question, so when I look at a menu I tend to go with a veggie option.

I got this portobello pesto panini and it was good, a little too burnt for my taste but it really was good, the filling was delicious! Everything on the menu looked great, to start I had a salad with “maple balsamic vinaigrette… so good! Vermonters do maple well;)

Four, I am obsessed with dresses… I don’t know how to wear anything but… it works in the south, it works a little less back up here but I’m making it work, one day at a time.

So that was my lovely Friday evening, bring on more just like it this summer!

Happy weekend everyone:)

My Parent’s 37th Anniversary

I didn’t run today, maybe I will later but as it stands I did an hour of yoga and that feels good enough to be considered training.

I did decide at midnight last night that I needed to make my first ever batch of no-bake cookies… uh why did nobody tell me they were the easiest things in the entire world to make? I feel like my life has not even made sense til now.

I WAS DONE IN 10 MINUTES!

And now I have all of these delicious cookies to stare at while I try to eat healthy… bullocks.

Anyway, today is a very exciting day in this household, today is my parent’s 37th Wedding Anniversary!

And the crowd goes willllllddddddddd………..

Yupp these two crazy kids met because my dad had the hiccups and my mom shoved a lemon in his mouth, 6 months later were married, yes they have been married for 37 years after only knowing each other for 6 months, CRAZY!

(The folks at a wedding in Atlanta)

They have stayed together after creating 4 of the craziest, messiest, humbled (see the sign above our heads) kids known to man.

(Us at the Grand Ole Opry)

They have stayed together even when the road became a little bumpy, or in this case bouncy…

(The family at Meg’s graduation party)

They have stayed together even through my emotional train wreck of teenage years, sorry mom and dad, I didn’t know the world wasn’t actually out to get me.

(Us at a wedding in Atlanta)

And after all that life has thrown at them… believe me, we threw a lot at them… they can still be caught holding hands at any given moment.

(The folks at the Grand Ole Opry)

So thank you mom and dad, for showing me that if you work hard enough and believe in each other, absolutely anything is possible. I love you guys more and more every day!

My Mom is like Woah!

I am so very happy to be writing this post about my wicked awesome mom. Here are some fun facts about the woman who so graciously raised  me.

1. After growing up in Lake Placid, NY she is an AMAZING ice skater… a trait she passed on to my older siblings, the two little ones are not so coordinated… she is also a ballin’ bowler. Kicks all of our butts.

(Ma and I at my high school graduation party.)

2. She is no frills. I mean this in the best way but the woman would never pay a dime for something in a clothing store that she couldn’t find at the thrift store she works at.  She rocks (and I mean rocks) sweatshirts like they are her uniform and I love her for it!

(Us in downtown Nashville last Thanksgiving)

3.  She is the most easy going person I have ever met, I can’t think of anyone who gets along with people like she does. I wish I could be as genuine and sweet as she is.

(Us at Breckenridge for St. Patty’s this last year)

4. She is well traveled and believes we should be as well, this is something I will always appreciate about her, no matter where one of the kids moves she will be there helping us move in and painting the rooms for us.

(Us at her first lady vol game while Pat Summitt was still there, she loved it!)

5. She is an INSANE sports fan! For as long as I can remember she has been cutting out the “Sports on tv” section of our local newspaper so that she can watch them that evening. That is dedication.

So that is my darling mother, I can’t even describe how much I love her.

Happy Mother’s day to everyone celebrating:)

HMT: Day 26 and My Sister the Champ.

Day: 26

Distance: 3 miles

Time: 36 minutes/12 min/m

Temperature: 50s and rain

Injuries: my calves are so sore from Insanity it isn’t even funny.

So the run went pretty well, I am getting used to the three mile “short runs” and the loop around my house is nice.  This next week I move up to 5 miles and I’m excited but super nervous…. we shall see how it goes.  Insanity is LITERALLY killing me, but in a really good way.  I did the “recovery” video yesterday which just meant slowly squat a billion times in 33 minutes.  I can’t say that I feel recovered but I feel good and isn’t that why I am doing it?

Anyway today’s post is more about a very special person to me.  As I have briefly mentioned before my family is amazing and I love them oh so much.  This particular post is about my older sister Katie, who in her 34 (I think) short years of life has accomplished so much to be proud of.  While teaching middle school in Vermont she became the teacher of the year for our hometown middle school and then for the state of Vermont.  She represented the state as a James Madison Fellow, a scholarship program for the most outstanding teachers of the Constitution.  Now, after only 2 years of teaching at her current middle school in Tennessee I am proud to say that she was named the Teacher of the Year!

While I joke that she is in it for the “Teacher of the Year” parking spot and that she bribes her way to the title everywhere she goes… I know that there is nobody that deserves each award more than her.

For as long as I can remember I have been compared to her, and there is nobody in the world I would rather be compared to.  She is first person I call when I have made a mistake that I don’t know how to fix (which happens quite often)… or when I’ve done something I am proud of.  She listens to me ramble and always finds a way to make me feel like no matter what I can get through it.  She has gone out of her way to help me in every major decision I have made so far in life and with every decision I always hope my outcomes will make her proud.

My sister” is the best” as she would say and I hope everyone has someone in their life as awesome as her.

Congratulations big sis!  You show off;)

Katie and I at my high school graduation.

We can’t play tennis like normal people… we use or alter egos “Buffy and Victoria”

Katie drove over to Knoxville to come one of my Field Hockey games.

I got her to run her first 5k! She did it like a boss.  (Sweetwater 420 in Atlanta, GA)

She is a far better ice skater than I.

Favorite picture of us!

Thanks for reading guys:)

“That” Day

Today was “that” day where the whole world was out to get me and I was just not havin’ it.   Here are a few of my sarcasm sprinkled tales of the last 24-hours that I think could have created such a day in the first place.

1.  I work the front desk of a couple hotels, sometimes that means I am by myself and must do whatever I can to rectify a situation solo.  For example: last night a guest called me to ask if I could come up to his room and plunge his toilet because he had a weak stomach and couldn’t do it himself.   Here is what I actually said to him “certainly sir please give me 15 minutes to get up there.”

But what I wanted to say was “HELL NO! I DIDN’T CLOG IT!”

I assure you it was a nightmare that I hope I never relive.

2.  I did not leave work until after midnight and after my 30 minute commute home I then had only a few hours to get some sleep before going back in to work this morning at 8.  I have pulled many turn around shifts in my day but this one was especially hard because I could not sleep.  Boo thinking about life!

I counted to at least 600 and was still unable to sleep… no bueno friends, no bueno.

3.  I returned a dress to TJ MAXX today, obviously meant that I had to search the racks for a new one… ended up trying on at least ten dresses and felt like a walrus.  I don’t know if it was the lack of sleep or the fact that I have a closet full of dresses I wore at my “fighting weight” that I can’t currently wear without reaching walrus in a dress status.

Nobody wants to feel like a walrus in a dress… it is just plain awkward.

I know how cute this looks but trust me, it does not feel cute at all.

So now that you know what went wrong today now I can tell you what I did to solve those 3 problems.

1.  There is no solution to plunging another person’s toilet… I just made a big joke about it at work and got a bunch of laughs.

2.  Exhaustion + Starbucks/Techno Music = Feeling like a normal person again.

(I’ve actually never had anyone spell my name correctly… the first person that does is getting a ballin’ tip)

3. I went straight home after the dressing room debacle, threw on my running clothes, put Day 3 of Insanity in the DVD player and I let that man practically kill me again… but in a good way.  THEN when I finished I went for a 3 mile walk just because.

What is that you see? A smile? Woot! Woot!

Anyway I hope all of you had great days and not “that” day like me… or if you did I hope you turn it around:)

What is stuck in my head Sunday.

When it comes to music there is no stone I will leave unturned.  I consider myself a bit of a mut when it comes to songs that I like, I know the difference between good music and bad music but it doesn’t mean I don’t love them equally.  My friends pick on me because I always have a song stuck in my head and there is never any warning when I will bust it out.  One day a co-worker made a list every time I got a new song, she was planning on making a rap with all of them but it is very hard to rap when I am busting out everything from Whitney Houston to Blink 182.

Anyway, here are some songs recently stuck in my head, and a few of my absolute favorites thrown in there;)

NO JUDGING! I  realize I have crazy tastes!

1. Edward Maya & Vika Jigulina “Stereo Love”

Great song to dance and snowboard to, techno for the win!

2. The Beatles “Eight Days a Week”

Who doesn’t love The Beatles?

3. Bedouin Soundclash “Mountain Top”

My absolute FAVORITE band in the world. I love all of their songs!

4. Taco “Puttin on the Ritz”

I can’t help it, I don’t know why I love this song so much but it just makes me laugh and wanna sing along.

5. Will Hoge “Even if it breaks your heart”

He co-wrote this song and I can’t express in words how much better I think his version is than the Eli Young Band’s.

6. Justin Bieber “Boyfriend”

Wait, how did that get here? Oops… can’t deny it is catchy.

7. Arcade Fire “Ready to Start”

Redemption from above.  Had the pleasure of seeing them at Bonnaroo, INCREDIBLE! If you haven’t checked them out please do!

8. The Kooks “She Moves in her own way”

This song was huge when I was living in England for the summer of ’06 reminds me of such fun things!

9. Frank Sinatra “Fly me to the Moon”

I have said this for as long as I can remember, this will without a doubt be the song I dance to at my very far in the future wedding.

10. Corey Hart “Sunglasses at Night”

There are no words to explain this one except for the simple fact that it is and always has been my FAVORITE song of all time. I realize it is literally on the list of the top 50 worst songs ever recorded but I do not care I love it.

So I hope you guys enjoyed! Stay tuned because it gets weirder… if you can believe that!

HMT: Day 16 and a Fun Fact of the Day.

So I haven’t gone over 3 miles but every time I get out there I do the holy crap how did I ever run 13 miles?  The holy crap feeling goes away after a little bit but man do I wish I hadn’t gotten so out of shape (damn you sweet tea and biscuits in TN!)  I just keep telling myself that it will get better and I believe it, just hoping it is sooner than later.

Anyway here it goes for Sunday’s run!

Day: 16

 Distance: 2 miles

Time: 20:00/10min/m (HOLLA!)

Temperature: 50’s expected rain but as I was so freakin fast (see above and insert sarcasm) it didn’t happen.

Injuries: Just tired from work!

There is something you should know about me.  The boy took me on a date to my favorite mexican restaurant for Margarita Monday (I literally just decided to call it that but I am so hoping it becomes a regular tradition like it sounds) and then he took me to my all-time favorite girly movie, Titanic. Yupp that is right folks,  I LOVE TITANIC.  I love everything about it.  It was the first PG 13 movie I ever saw, I can not only quote the movie, I can tell you when it cuts to commercial on TNT.  Believe me when I say I had a smile on my face for the entire 2 hours and surprisingly the boy didn’t even fall asleep!

Fun Fact of the Day: Made it Facebook official with the boy because he did the above mentioned.

Tequila + Titanic = Relationship Status Change;)

Strawberry margaritas make the world go round.

I literally hate 3D movies… just because you can doesn’t necessarily mean you should.

“So, wanna go to a real party?”

A (Semi)-Wordless Weekend.

Yeahhh wordless and I don’t know how to get along. Jabber jaws since birth but anyway here is my weekend in a nut shell!

My lovely dog Murphy!

The boy and I play scrabble like it is going out of style.

Pie in the Sky is delicious!

I watched this game and almost cried. I love the Penguins but I guess I just have to hold out hope for my other love the Bruins!

I know they aren’t very healthy but it is better than candy… and delicious.

VT Flannel Company… because it is freaking cold out right now!

My life is sometimes reduced to pizza, craisins, and scrabble… but man do I love it:)

What Easter means to me…

A family I love so dearly.

A certain boy that is a friend.

Sweets I’ve missed like crazy!

Hockey! Hockey! Hockey!

I hope everyone had an awesome Easter or just a pretty spectacular Sunday if you didn’t celebrate Easter!  I got to spend the day with my parents and boyfriend watching the USA Women’s hockey team crush Russia. Pretty cool to see them get over 50 shots on goal (their goalie WAS AMAZING) and they won 9-0.  As a die hard NHL fan watching girls hockey isn’t always as interesting to me, but these girls have their stuff together.  I even got to have my first sweet since giving ALL of them up for Lent… talk about a near death experience!
